Florida Sod Guide: Start Here
1. Choose the Right Sod for Your Florida Lawn
Florida lawns deal with heat, strong sun, periods of heavy rain and seasonal dry conditions. Choosing the right grass starts with understanding your property and how you want your finished lawn to look and perform.
Bahia Sod
An economical Florida grass option commonly chosen for larger properties and lawns where drought tolerance and lower long-term irrigation demands are priorities.
Explore Bahia →Floratam
A widely used St. Augustine variety with broad blades and the lush appearance many homeowners associate with a traditional Florida lawn.
Explore Floratam →Bitter Blue
A premium St. Augustine variety recognized for its attractive blue-green color and dense lawn appearance.
Explore Bitter Blue →ProVista

2. Measure Your Lawn & Calculate Your Sod
Before ordering sod, determine the total square footage of the areas you want to cover. For rectangular sections, multiply length × width to calculate square footage.
Measure front yards, backyards, side yards and smaller grass areas separately, then add the sections together.
A 2,000 sq. ft. lawn requires approximately 5 pallets before accounting for additional material for cuts, curves and irregular areas.
For many projects, approximately 10% additional material is a useful starting point. Our calculator handles the math and rounds your estimated order up to full pallets.

3. Understand Florida Sod Pricing
Your total project cost depends on the sod variety, number of pallets, delivery location and whether you need removal, preparation or professional installation.
Sod Material
Current pallet pricing starts at $225 for Bahia, $325 for Floratam and $425 for Bitter Blue. A $10 pallet fee applies.
Delivery
Delivery is priced by destination. Rates vary throughout Venice, Sarasota, North Port, Englewood, Port Charlotte, Wellen Park, Nokomis and Osprey.
Installation
Professional installation is an additional service and can include the labor required to turn delivered sod into a completed lawn.
4. Prepare Your Yard for New Sod
Good lawn preparation gives new sod better contact with the soil and a better opportunity to establish successfully.
Depending on the property, preparation can include removing the existing turf and weeds, clearing debris, grading uneven areas, checking irrigation coverage and creating a smooth planting surface.
Installing sod directly over an established lawn can create problems because the new roots need access to the underlying soil.

Make sure irrigation reaches the entire new lawn, including edges, corners and areas that may receive less sprinkler coverage.
Allow Roots to Establish
