Sod Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Florida sod varieties, pallet coverage, pricing, delivery, installation and caring for your new lawn.
Ordering & Buying Sod
What to know before placing your Venice Sod order.
How do I order sod from Venice Sod?
You can browse available sod varieties through our online sod shop, determine how much material you need using our Sod Calculator, and place your order for local delivery.
Can I buy sod by the pallet?
Yes. Venice Sod sells fresh sod by the pallet. Each pallet covers approximately 400 square feet, although actual coverage can vary slightly depending on the sod and installation.
Can I pick up my sod?
Venice Sod currently provides sod through local delivery rather than customer pickup. Delivery is available throughout our Sarasota and Charlotte County service area.
What types of sod do you sell?
We offer popular Florida sod varieties including Bahia, Floratam St. Augustine, Bitter Blue St. Augustine and ProVista St. Augustine. Visit our Sod Varieties page to compare them.
How fresh is the sod?
Sod is a living, perishable product, so timing matters. Venice Sod focuses on sourcing fresh Florida sod and coordinating delivery for local lawn projects. Sod should generally be installed as soon as practical after delivery.
Sod Pallets & Lawn Measurements
Calculate your lawn before placing an order.
How many square feet does a pallet of sod cover?
A Venice Sod pallet covers approximately 400 square feet.
Read our complete sod pallet coverage guide for examples and calculations.
How many pallets of sod do I need?
Divide your total lawn square footage by approximately 400 to get your base pallet requirement. Because cuts, curves, landscape beds and measurement differences can create waste, additional material is often helpful.
Our Sod Calculator can calculate this automatically.
Should I order extra sod?
In many projects, yes. Ordering only the exact measured square footage can leave you short after cutting around curves, beds, walkways and other obstacles. Our calculator allows you to include an additional percentage when estimating your pallet quantity.
How do I measure my lawn for sod?
Divide the lawn into manageable rectangles or sections, measure the length and width of each area, calculate the square footage and then add the areas together.
You can enter multiple lawn areas directly into our Florida Sod Calculator.

Where does Venice Sod deliver?
We deliver throughout our Sarasota and Charlotte County service area, including Venice, Sarasota, North Port, Englewood, Port Charlotte, Wellen Park, Nokomis and Osprey.
See our complete Sod Delivery page for delivery information.
How much does sod delivery cost?
Delivery pricing depends on the destination. Current delivery pricing is shown during the ordering process and on our Sod Pricing page.
Where will my sod be unloaded?
Delivery placement depends on safe access and site conditions. Sod pallets are unloaded using delivery equipment designed for palletized materials. The driver must be able to safely access and unload at the property.
Does the forklift drive on my driveway?
Our delivery equipment is intended to unload sod from an appropriate accessible location. We avoid driving heavy delivery equipment onto customer driveways where possible because of the risk of damage from equipment and pallet weight. Final placement depends on safe site access.
Sod Installation & Lawn Replacement
Delivery-only and professional installation options are available.
Does Venice Sod install sod?
Yes. Professional sod installation is available in addition to sod delivery.
Do I need to remove my old grass before installing sod?
In most lawn replacement projects, the existing grass and unwanted vegetation should be removed so the new sod can make proper contact with prepared soil.
Read our guide: Can You Lay Sod Over Existing Grass?
How should I prepare my yard for new sod?
Preparation commonly involves removing existing vegetation and debris, addressing grading issues where needed and creating a suitable soil surface for the new sod.
Can I install the sod myself?
Yes. Customers can order sod for DIY installation. Keep in mind that sod is heavy, perishable and best installed promptly after delivery. Proper preparation, tight seams and immediate watering are important during installation.
New Sod Watering & Care
Help your new lawn establish after installation.
Does new sod need to be watered immediately?
Yes. Newly installed sod needs moisture while its roots begin establishing in the soil underneath. The sod and underlying soil should not be allowed to dry excessively during the initial establishment period.
How often should I water new sod?
There is no single watering schedule that is correct for every property. Weather, rainfall, soil, sod variety, irrigation coverage and time of year all affect watering requirements.
New sod generally requires more frequent watering while it establishes and can transition toward an appropriate long-term irrigation schedule as rooting develops.
When can I mow new sod?
Avoid mowing before the sod has begun establishing enough to resist being lifted or shifted by mowing equipment. Establishment time varies with grass variety, weather, irrigation and growing conditions.
Why are there seams between newly installed sod pieces?
Sod is installed in individual flat-cut pieces, so seams are normal immediately after installation. Proper placement, watering and healthy growth allow the grass to establish and fill in over time.
